A heaven for a French gourmandise meal in Seven Dials
I find this restaurant name, Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels, to be quite funny. If you translate it to English, it means Company of Supernatural Wines. It’s true that the wine and food are divine, but I was assured that there was no magic involved 🙂
Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels is one of our favourite places in London to go for a relaxed gourmet meal paired with a good bottle of wine. You can go there just for a glass of wine but this cosy wine bar also serves original small-plate dishes, mostly traditional French food with a light touch of fusion cuisine. I have never been able to resist ordering a small plate of food when I go there for a drink. It’s not good to drink on an empty stomach anyway, right?
Jeremy (the hubby) knew this place from Paris and, as soon we discovered it was also going to open in London, we started ‘taking regular appointments’. The location itself is very charming, in Neal’s Yard Covent Garden, with access to an outdoor terrace. Perfect for a summer afternoon in London.
We went there for an early dinner on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Ohhhh we were starving – famished is perhaps a better word!! We had a very light lunch to save some space for the gourmandise meal ahead of us but not to worry, Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels came to the rescue!
There’s plenty to choose from the menu: cheese platters, premium charcuterie, specials of the day and many tapas-style dishes. The menu has core dishes that are always on but then it is refreshed from time to time with new additions to sparkle our curiosity. One of the ‘always on’ plate we die for is the Prosciutto Cotto al Tartufo; it has been on the menu ever since we came for the first time, and we really hope it stays there forever 🙂 I have never tasted such a tasty ham, thinly sliced and with a delicate truffle flavour. Truffle + Ham = Supernatural ‘Yumminess’. My advice is to not pick all of your food at once, you might end up ordering the whole menu through pure self-indulgence. Given that the tables are quite small and the service is quite fast, you can continue ordering and have the food quickly ready for a 2nd, 3nd,4th, 5th, 6th and 7th (or more) round.
Here’s a quick snapshot of the delicious food we had:
Crab in brioche
Mozzarella with basil sauce
Now let’s talk about the wine.
The wine list is tasteful and well selected and the sommelier’s advice is always spot on. Each time we ask for some advice we are always delighted with the recommendation, which pairs perfectly with the food and our wine preference. Jeremy had a slight collapse when we found out that one of his favourite wines ‘Domaine de la Taille aux loups’ was not part of the menu anymore. But we took our chances and ended up welcoming a new wine to our family – L’insolite – Thierry Germain (Saumur). Very light and crispy, perfect for a hot day.
If you are looking for a restaurant in Covent Garden and want to enjoy premium wine and gourmet food in a laid-back but elegant atmosphere, I would say that it’s worth considering the Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels. However, if you are on a strict diet, I would highly recommend you do no to pass even close to the Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels. This place is for pure gourmandise pleasures and to enjoy good wine. Just bear in mind that it’s a premium location, with premium wine and premium food, so be ready to also enjoy a premium bill.
I will end this review with a challenge. Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels has a quite interesting concept that I think is worth sharing- the ‘Mystery Wine’. If you order the mystery wine and you guess which one it is, you get to drink the full bottle of it for free. Are you up to the challenge?
